Cape May, NJ
Two coastal cottages on 6.6 acres of Cape May island — Nordic restraint meets Cape Cod tradition, set within a restored meadow built for the birds that pass through each season.

The Rookery sits on 6.6 acres on the island of Cape May, New Jersey, now subdivided into three properties. The work begins with the land itself: a full overhaul of the landscape, bringing tired, run-down soil back to life with native plants, wildflowers, and open meadow — a habitat for the remarkable migratory bird population that gives the place its name.
Within that landscape, we are designing and building two coastal cottages, each drawing on Nordic simplicity and Cape Cod character. Every cottage offers two bedrooms, a flexible office, two baths, and an outdoor shower for coming in from the beach or the garden.
Composite cedar shake wraps the exteriors, ready to weather the salt air. Inside, the finishes are timeless and tactile, grounded by traditional textures like slate flooring. The two interiors are not identical, but they are made to speak to each other — and both are designed to bring the nature just outside right in.
